Day 111/365: Epictetus on hard training

Welcome to The Stoic Ledger, a daily money meditation from one of the Stoic sages.

111/365: Epictetus on hard training

“We must undergo a hard winter training and not rush into things for which we haven’t prepared.” – Epictetus

Training is what readies us for the arena. When we train, we control the environment and simulate the movements needed for the main event. It’s in the training room where we can disaggregate the whole into component pieces, separated and much easier to master.

If we don’t do the training, we won’t perform to the standard when it counts.

Training is the mechanism by which we raise the chance of success.

By studying an unreasonable amount about the company you’re interviewing with, you are training for the interview, and more likely to land the job.

By working on that negotiation course, you are training for the time you ask for a raise, and more likely to get the raise.

By reading about financial independence and the paths to take, you are training for the independence, and more likely to achieve financial independence.

There is always a rep you can go secure that will raise your level of preparation and therefore your odds of success.
